The Great Reshuffle: What's Causing Employees to Change Jobs?

Do you know what is The Great Reshuffle? Why is this hot term transforming the US workforce?

After the COVID pandemic brought the world to a complete halt, causing many US workers to lose their jobs, a shift in personal value also occurred. More and more employees were quitting their jobs in search of an employer that would offer them the things that they were looking for: the right pay, great benefits, and better work arrangements in the long term.

Unlike The Great Resignation which focuses on the cons of the workforce shift, The Great Reshuffle takes a more inspirational approach, highlighting values that have become prominent within the same group.

"There’s now a greater ability for people to fit work into their lives, instead of having lives that squeeze into their work.”

Anthony Klotz, an Associate Professor of Management at Texas A&M University

In order to adapt, employers are now being forced to consider a change in company culture. In 2021, Microsoft conducted a study (Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Index) that targeted 30,000 people in 31 countries, and according to the results, over two-fifths of people considered leaving their work within the next year. The biggest contributing factor to this change is the rise in demand for remote and hybrid jobs. Nearly 90% of US workers feel that they want the opportunity to work from home at least one day a week.

“Leaders must be focused on cultivating thriving cultures of internal mobility, prioritizing continuous learning and delivering robust benefits to support their workers.”

Rob Falzon, Prudential Vice-Chair
