Since 2014, the U.S. has observed National Forklift Safety Day every second Tuesday of June! This day highlights the importance of forklift training and safety guidelines for the manufacturing, logistics, and warehouse industries.
The Industrial Truck Association (ITA) created National Forklift Safety Day as an opportunity for the industry to educate customers, policymakers, and government officials about the safe use of forklifts and the importance of proper operator training.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), if companies implemented more stringent training policies, estimates that about 70% of forklift accidents in the U.S. could be prevented.
OSHA‘s most recent estimates indicate that between 35,000 and 62,000 injuries occur every year involving forklifts. Forklift accidents that result in serious injury total 34,900 annually. Training is an essential factor in reducing the number of injuries and deaths.
The forklift safety topics will be front and center at the ninth annual National Forklift Safety Day conference held on June 14 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The public is welcome to attend the Tuesday morning program from 9–11 a.m. The presentations will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.
National Forklift Safety Day is a yearly reminder to be steadfast in creating a safety culture.
