Women In Manufacturing.

Since 2001, International Women’s Day is celebrated world-wide while also initiating a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This year’s International Women’s Day is dedicated to women breaking barriers in the Manufacturing Industry. Despite women making up 50% of the total workforce in the United States, do you know what percentage of women make up the Manufacturing Industry? Only 30% of the Manufacturing Industry is made up of women, with just 1 in 4 of them holding a leadership role.

Since 1970, women’s share in the Manufacturing Industry has remained relatively constant, peaking at 33.2% in 1990 before declining to 29% in 2016 (Figure 1). This gender disparity is not uncommon in this male dominated industry, but in 2012 The Manufacturing Institute of Washington D.C. implemented a multi-faceted women initiative referred to as the STEP Ahead Program. As a result of the program, in 2013 and 2014 four NJ female residents were chosen as the newest awardees of this prestigious award, becoming the representation of a new, younger generation of women in manufacturing.

In a recent study conducted by organizations such as Catalyst, data shows that Fortune 500 companies with a higher percentage of women employees experience 35% higher return on equity and 34% higher total return over companies with fewer women employees; this is because hiring in diversity leads to a more divergent perspective in decision-making, more innovative and creative approaches, introduced balance in organizational management and improved business in financial performance.
